Calling all bird photographers!

By Nick Anich 13 Jun 2023
Common Gallinule Gallinula galeata

We are in the process of sorting through photos for the upcoming bird atlas book, and have compiled a limited list of species for which we may want additional photos. This summer is a great time to try for more cool photos of breeding birds!

We are most interested in photos that are:

  • High quality, in-focus, beautiful, and interesting
  • Preferably show some aspect of breeding biology
  • Preferably taken in Wisconsin

We also already have many photos to sift through, so with this call for photos we are NOT looking for a dump of more photos, we are hoping for a targeted response to the list below. Therefore, please send no more than 2 per species from the list below, and limit it to your best shots, and ones showing breeding behavior as much as possible.  (For rarer species, we will be more open to using photos that do not show breeding behavior).

We’d love it if you headed out into the field specifically looking for breeding behavior for these species but as with atlasing, remember to practice ethical bird photography. Nesting birds are more sensitive to disturbance, so make sure your photography is not interfering with building nests or caring for young.

If you have high-quality photos of the species below and willing to allow us to print them in the atlas book, please email them to trschultz44@gmail.com by Sept 15, 2023.
(Note that we did have a website to solicit photos for the book but that method of submission is now closed.) Also note that not every photo submitted will be chosen for the book.

Also, it would be very helpful if the file name of the photo could include: species, date, location, and your name, for example: TrumpterSwan_060215_CrexMeadows_NickAnich_IMG1043.jpg.

Thanks!
