Four out of 5 years of field work are now complete for the Wisconsin Breeding Bird Atlas! We owe a sincere THANK YOU to the more than 1,700 atlasers who have contributed to Wisconsin Breeding Bird Atlas II to date.
As part of the atlas, a small group of observers are conducting point counts. In this article we introduce this wing of the atlas effort, explain how it’s gathering critical information for conservation efforts in the state, and report on some preliminary results from 2017.
Well, we are past the halfway point! We now have three years complete, and only two years of field work to go.
With the addition this past year of Mississippi Kite to Wisconsin's breeding avifauna, what species will be next? What should we be on the lookout for?
You may have heard that we are also running point count surveys as part of the atlas. In this article we introduce this wing of the atlas effort, explain how it’s gathering critical information for conservation efforts in the state, and report on some very preliminary results from 2016.
It’s been a great second season! First off, a HUGE THANKS to the over 1,100 atlasers that contributed to Wisconsin Breeding Bird Atlas II so far!
For the first time ever, Mississippi Kites have been found breeding in Wisconsin, with confirmation of a pair raising one chick at a nest near Janesville, Rock County. This represents one of the northernmost breeding records in the species’ range and perhaps the most exciting find of Wisconsin Breeding Bird Atlas II (WBBA II) so far!
Since we are only 1 year in, it’s hard to make direct comparisons to the first atlas (WBBA I) just yet, because we only have about 1/5th of the coverage that we expect. But it’s interesting to see differences in the list of confirmed species so far.
