North Carolina Landowners

Help make the NC Bird Atlas a success!

Access to private lands, and their diversity of habitats, will provide us with the most complete maps of bird distribution and abundance in North Carolina.

Nearly 3 billion birds have disappeared from North America since 19701 . The NC Bird Atlas is a state-wide effort involving the support of many partners and is intended to help us better understand bird abundance and distribution across all of North Carolina. While valuable wildlife studies can be conducted on publicly-owned lands, these tracts represent only a fraction of the landscape.

Over 85% of property in North Carolina is privately owned2

The opportunity to access private lands is critical to the success of a comprehensive survey like the NC Bird Atlas. We recognize the vital and various roles that private landowners play in our state. We also understand that many wish to make additional contributions to the health and well-being of our wildlife.

For these reasons, we ask that you consider allowing the NC Wildlife Resources Commission to survey birds on your property at least two times: once during the summer and once during the winter
